Exchange relationships are ubiquitous in social life and the identification of principles governing the exchange of resources between employees and their organizations, superiors and coworkers may contribute to a better understanding of a variety of organizational behaviors and the more accurate predicting of their consequences. The aim of the article is to consider the correlations between the theory of exchange and the ways in which employee-organization relationships are shaped. To this end, classical theories of exchange are evoked: H. Homans's behavioral theory of exchange and P. Blau's structural theory of exchange. The viability of employing the premise of the two theories in the context of shaping employee-organization relations is corroborated by a presentation of published research results pertaining to perceived organizational support, work commitment, motivation for engaging in civic activities, and counterproductive behavior. Możliwości wykorzystania założeń tych teorii dla potrzeb kształtowania relacji pracownik - organizacja w ramach zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi zilustrowano wynikami badań dotyczącymi postrzeganego wsparcia organizacyjnego, zaangażowania w pracę, motywów podejmowania zachowań obywatelskich i zachowań kontrproduktywnych.
