The ratification of the 1972 World Heritage Convention is a first step out of many taken by each State Party in the Convention implementation process leading to, among other things, the nomination of the sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List. What happens after a successful inscription on the List, however, is equally, if not more important for the long term preservation of the heritage sites. This article illustrates the degree of implementation of the 1972 Convention in the Kingdom of Bahrain, a small island state in the Middle East. Consideration is given to a variety of legal, policy, administrative and diplomatic measures taken since the inscription of the first site in Bahrain on the World Heritage List in 2005. The paper aims to demonstrate how different implementation measures help building the credibility of a State Party and protecting cultural heritage sites with and without the Outstanding Universal Value. It is hoped that similar good practices could be replicated by the other States Parties to the Convention, thus supporting its sustainable implementation worldwide.(original abstract)

Ratyfikacja Konwencji Światowego Dziedzictwa z 1972 r. jest pierwszym z wielu kroków podejmowanych przez każde państwo - stronę w procesie wdrażania konwencji, zmierzającym, między innymi, do nominacji miejsc na liście światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO. To, co dzieje się po udanym wpisaniu na listę, jest równie ważne, lub nawet ważniejsze, dla ochrony dziedzictwa w długiej perspektywie. Ten artykuł ilustruje stopień wdrożenia konwencji z 1972 r. w Królestwie Bahrajnu, małym państwie wyspiarskim na Bliskim Wschodzie. Poniżej rozważane są różnorodne rozwiązania prawne, polityczne, administracyjne i dyplomatyczne podjęte od czasu wpisania pierwszego miejsca w Bahrajnie na listę światowego dziedzictwa w 2005 r. Celem artykułu jest zademonstrowanie, w jaki sposób różne środki wdrożeniowe pomagają budować wiarygodność państwa - strony i chronić miejsca dziedzictwa kulturowego, zarówno te charakteryzujące się wyjątkową uniwersalną wartością, jak i bez niej. Oczekuje się, że podobne procedury mogą zostać powtórzone przez inne państwa - strony konwencji, wspierając w ten sposób jej zrównoważone wdrożenie na całym świecie.(abstrakt oryginalny)
