Colombian City of Medellín: Discussing Social Urbanism's Social Impact

Colombian city of Medellín used to be the most violent in the world (1991) but then, has become the most innovative one (2013). Medellín case is brought back as a positive case of change and looked up to by other cities. It is one of the cradles of "social urbanism", an approach to city - making which aims to solve social issues with interventions into the urban space, with infrastructure, public places etc. While success of this approach has been internationally acknowledged, less successful effects are often silenced. This paper is focused on the shadows of social urbanism and ways of being that remain intact despite announced transformation. It aims to contribute to fact-based discussion on actual effectiveness of social urbanism in addressing social challenges. (original abstract)
