One of the attributes of the 19th c. capitalism was economic liberalism and following the latter, the enterprise of the managing subject. The main barrier for the sustenance and expansion of the enterprises were the limitations on the part of the effective demand. Despite some significant changes which took place in the mechanism of the functioning of the capitalist economy in the contemporary market economies the barrier of demand is also the most crucial from the point of view of the enterprises. The result of so defined logic of the system has been, on the one hand, directing the activities of the enterprise onto the maximum and varied satisfaction of the effective demand, and on the other hand, high social costs resulting from the activity of individual managing subjects. The socialist organization of the economy, together with the suppression of private ownership of the means of production and the ''anarchy of the market" was supposed to reconcile the micro and macro-rationality of economic activités. The effects of economic collectivization did not, hower, met the expectations both of the founders of the new system and the consumers. The managing subjects whose ideal in the traditional socialist economy was passivity in the handling of planned tasks, proved to be active participants of the economic game. However, the system's conditions caused that their activity and enterprise did not favour ''better and better satisfaction of social needs". The new system turned out to be wasteful in the macro-economic scale with simultaneous lack of micro-economic efficiency. In the following reforms of the socialist system of management, a greater role was accorded to the market mechanism. The future of the Polish economy, then, depends on the positive answer to the question of whether the system's frameworks will allow for an effective activity of the market mechanism. If so, then how to prevent the costs connected with the functioning of the market preserving its micro-economic efficiency?(original abstract)
