This article presents the results of research conducted within a medium-sized company specializing in designing and producing mechanical appliances upon request. The authors investigated potential manufacturing costs savings per-unit, obtained as a result of changing production strategy from single unit to micro batch production. The research was inspired by concept of product modularity in terms of Mass Customization strategy. Since products redesigning along with this concept, under conditions of engineer-to-order companies is a difficult and time consuming process, the authors purpose was to highlight its potential manufacturing benefits in real production system. This research gave universal benchmark for engineer-to-order companies, hesitating whether to begin transition to mass customizer. While supervising the production system, a series of experiments has been carried out in order to analyze time reduction of production cycle for per-unit manufacturing of mechanical parts in single unit production and micro batch of three pieces.(original abstract)
