The consequences of invasions of non-native organisms, including plants, are considered to be one of the major global threats to biodiversity. This problem can only be resolved at international level. Local action alone cannot bring about the positive results that are needed. The importance of addressing alien species invasions is evidenced by discussions about them at the United Nations Conferences on Biodiversity on Sustainable Development (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1992 and Rio+20, 2012) and Alien Species (Trondheim, Norway, 1996) and also at special scientific forums (EMAPI, NEOBIOTA, Synanthropization of Flora and Vegetation, ESENIAS)
