The study investigates differences in psychological contracts (PCs) concluded between employees and employers and seeks factors that cause them. Using a range of demographic factors, individual work factors, and contextual factors as the control variables, the influence of each of them on the shape of a psychological contract (PC) is assessed. Based on six dimensions of a PC, the nature of contemporary PCs in the workplace is ascertained. The dimensions are assigned two sets of eight traits each to describe employees' obligations to their employer and their perceived obligations of the employer. To determine relationships between the control variables and to evaluate the role of moderators, correlation analysis and a multiple regression analysis are performed. The data used in the study were collected during a quantitative survey of representative employees (n=500) from randomly selected knowledge-intensive companies based in the Business Services Sector (BSS). The analysis of the data pointed out that the type of employee's position in the organization was significant for the shape of their PCs, and that the strength of employee obligations was significantly influenced by individual work factors. The research findings underscore the importance of understanding how PCs are shaped. (original abstract)
