The aim of the study is to present the concept of smart city as the direction of city development. The concept of a smart city is currently one of the many aspects of the city's strategy implemented by local governments. Modern solutions make it possible to effectively carry out public utility tasks, which results in improvement of the lives of the inhabitants of a given local community. The author presents examples of the implementation of smart city elements in Bielsko-Biała. Conclusions: the innovative technologies implemented in Bielsko-Biała so far, as in many other medium-sized Polish cities, are not particularly comprehensive. These are individual improvements that positively affect the quality of life of residents, improve the natural environment and reduce public spending.(original abstract)
