Underground maps have become an iconic image that has transcended the function for which they were created. Their multiple visual and spatial possibilities include functioning as a cartography that simplifies and organises the perception we have of a territory. A study of the geography of perception is presented based on underground plans of the city of Green Bay prepared for the analysis (WI, USA). The methodological and educational possibilities of this utopian cartography are explored for its use as a mental map. A group of citizens' knowledge and perception of the city they reside in is analysed through a synthetic cartography. (original abstract)
