W artykule zwrócimy uwagę na normowanie stosunków społeczności mojżeszowej z państwem w płaszczyźnie prawnej, na sprawy sporne i konfliktowe, na stanowisko Związku wobec niektórych elementów naszej powojennej rzeczywistości społeczno-politycznej. Brak szczegółowych badań socjologicznych nie pozwala na szersze ujęcie przedmiotu, lecz zawęża jego charakterystykę do oficjalnej działalności kierownictwa Związku. Mimo to dalsze uwagi mogą stanowić przyczynek do historii i działalności wyznania mojżeszowego w Polsce Ludowej w zakresie wyznaczonym podtytułem opracowania. (fragment tekstu)

Judaism is one of the most obscure non-Christian denominations in Poland, though its traditions are very old and go back to the 12th century. Following the Nazi extermination, the group membership, dwindled from over 3 million in 1939 to a few score thousand in 1946 and a mere 2.000 in the late forties. The authorities felt obliged to help organize the religious life of the small group practically from the beginning. At the same time it became necessary to adjust its activity and organization to the new principles of the political system including freedom of conscience and religion (before the War, there existed a peculiar religious pressure since all the Jews were automatically considered to be of Judaist persuasion). The whole process was long and troublesome until eventually in 1949 there came into existence the Judaist Religious Union a religious organisation with voluntary membership. There were other conflicting and debatable problems between the Union and the State. Equally controversial was the question of synagogues, cemeteries and legacy of prewar Jewish communities. They were aggravated by the unfriendly activity of that section of the Jewish emigration which left the country after 1945. That small Jewish community that decided to stay in Poland strove to achieve a workable relationship with the State or even approve of some social and political reforms in fields other than the religious one which helped continue and pen increase the Union's religious and non-religious activities.
