Private and Public Owners in Football: the Case of Ekstraklasa

Purpose - Football clubs in Poland operate under various ownership structures, including private and state ownership. In recent years, a debate has been slowly emerging in Poland regarding whether the state should support professional football clubs. This article aims to compare the functioning of privately-owned and state-owned clubs in the Ekstraklasa, the highest football league in Poland, in terms of the primary objectives pursued by sports clubs. Research method - The study examined sporting performance in the Ekstraklasa over a five-season period from 2017 to 2022. Furthermore, it analysed match attendance figures and assessed the popularity of Ekstraklasa clubs on five major social media platforms. Additionally, the study conducted an analysis of the top 100 highest-value player transfers in the history of Polish club football. Results - When considering average values privately-owned clubs in the Ekstraklasa outperform their counterparts in league competition. They also attract, on average, higher number of social media followers and stadium attendance. Moreover, they engage more frequent in player transfers, resulting in significant revenue for their budgets. Originality /value / implications /recommendations - This article aims to explore whether privately-owned clubs outperform state-owned clubs across various dimensions of club operations, providing valuable insights for those tasked with managing sports in Poland.
