Obserwowane w latach 1990. w Polsce zmiany płodności i zawierania małżeństw przebiegają podobnie do obserwowanych wcześniej w krajach Europy Zachodniej i Północnej, nazwanych drugim przejściem demograficznym. Przemiany demograficzne tak określone charakteryzował spadek płodności, opóźnianie zawierania małżeństw i prokreacji, zmiany modelu rodziny i wynikające stąd zmiany struktur gospodarstw domowych, przy czym wszystkie zmiany nastąpiły w dość krótkim czasie i uległy szybkiej dyfuzji. Przeobrażenia te odbiegały znamiennie od przewidywanych w ramach teorii przejścia demograficznego, a ich rozprzestrzenianie się w stosunkowo krótkim czasie świadczyło o zaistnieniu trwałych przesłanek tych przemian.(abstrakt oryginalny)

The recent changes in fertility and nuptiality in Poland as well as in other countries undergoing transformation to a market economy are similar to those that to.ok place earlier in Western European countries which have been named the second demographic transition (Lesthaeghe, van de Kaa 1986; van de Kaa 1987, 1994; Lesthaeghe, 1991). This terminology was ini- tially adopted to describe the radical changes in fertility and nuptiality behaviours that have been observed in developed countries sińce the 1960s. and to identify their determinants. The concept of the second demographic transition, widely used in studies on demograhic change in developed countries, is less known among Polish demographers. Therefore, the first part of the article presents the concept together with the brief overview of discussions on determinants of changes in fertility and nuptiality related to changes in family formation and dissolution patterns. The conceptual framework underpinning analysis of the second demo-graphic transition could be useful for analyses of demographic developments in Poland in the 1990s. The explanatory framework by van de Kaa (1994) is taken as a point of reference to formulate a framework which shows similarities and differences in structural, cultural and technological processes underlying shifts in demographic attitudes and behaviours in Poland in com- parison to those observed in developed economies. The framework suggested for analyses of demographic evolutions in Poland which are taking place in the context of a fundamental systemie transformation could also be applied for studying recent demographic changes in transition countries.
