Mortality in Poland in 1989-1993: a Response to Economic Reforms?

Sociological studies show that, at the beginning of the 1980s, Poland was a country in which about 60-80% of adults were in favour of introduc- ing market laws and free competition into the economy [Kolarska-Bobinska, 1990]. The free market was accepted as a rejection of the existing misery and a symbol of good things to be found elsewhere. The Polish economic reforms started in 1989. They were intended to lead the country to a Western-type economy and thus to a considerable improvement in the standard of living. However, most of the population as well as many experts were unaware of the social and economic costs of the transforma- tion. Implications in terms of ownership, job security, and work attitudes had yet to be considered and absorbed.(fragment of text)
