After the Second World War when the "Iron Curtain" divided Europe into two parts, the socialist countries differed markedly in terms of demographic transition. The most advanced were the German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia and Hungary [Pavlik, 1991]. The remaining countries of Central and Eastern Europę, including European countries of the former Soviet Union, were behind them. Poland was also behind in some respects. By reference to the Hajnal line, cutting Poland into two parts with Poznań to the west and Warsaw to the east, the western part was morę advanced. These regional differences still exist. Some studies have concluded that the demographic transition in Poland was 50 years late in relation to England and Wales and about 40 years late compared to Germany and the Czech Republic [Festy, 1991].(fragment of text)
