As a result of statistical data analysis it can be said, that the main research question raised at the beginning of this paper is verified positively. Data concerning changes of GDP within the period of 1998-2006 (Figure 1 and 2) from one side, and banking profitability measured among others with ROE and ROA indicators (Figure 12 and 13) suggest strong correlation between profitability of banking sector and the growth of local economy in all categories of EU countries. Searching for sources of that correlation it should be emphasized, that banks still remain main funds supplier for economic development (Figure 3) and the contribution of total assets of credit institutions in GDP is systematically growing. It seems to be surprising especially as stock exchange capitalization in relation to GDP is decreasing at the same time (Figure 4). The main transmission channel between banks activity and real economy development still remain loans and deposits. It is confirmed with growing contribution of Net Profits after tax and extraordinary items in GDP (Figure 11) . The growth of banks effectiveness is strongly supported with decreasing contribution of operating costs in banks' total income (Figure 14). It seems realistic, that observed processes, give a prospectus not only of maintaining high rate of economic development, but finally of achieving demanded level of welfare. It also seems evident, that processes setting in banking sectors of Poland and other EU-12 state contribute to shortening this period. (original abstract)
