One of the strategic objectives in Poland and other European countries is to improve energy efficiency. This paper aims to present a method for evaluating environmental effects of the project associated with thermal insulation of the building including the assessment of sensitivity of selected variables. To evaluate the environmental impact the methodology of life cycle assessment (LCA) was used. Both the environmental costs (increased burden on the environment) related to thermal insulating materials and environmental gains (reduction of environmental load) resulting from the reduction of energy demand for heating in the use phase of the building, were taken into consideration. The options were included with regard to the type of the external wall, heat source used in the building, the type of thermal insulating material, and the climate zone in which the building is located. For each studied variant a positive effect was obtained - reducing the burden on the environment as a result of thermal insulation. (original abstract)
