Selection of Covariates in Small Area Estimation with Multilevel Models

Using data collections from common sample surveys, researchers deal with design-based effective statistics, but estimates are affected by a substantial loss of precision at small area level. Models can easily accommodate statistical relations between survey parameters and area predictors, in order to provide more efficient area-level statistics. Some problems arise when researchers try to exploit at one's best the complex statistical information in the available survey data. Authors discuss this problem of exploiting all the available data at unit and area level simultaneously in a single two-level model.
