Czynniki konkurencyjności miasta, zidentyfikowane przez OECD, obejmują: zróżnicowanie prowadzonej działalności gospodarczej, jakość życia, dostępność wykwalifikowanej siły roboczej, dobre skomunikowanie miasta (zarówno z innymi miastami/obszarami, jak i wewnętrznie), innowacyjność firm i instytucji oraz zdolność podejmowania decyzji. The aim of the article is to present factors which, under globalising economy conditions, can contribute and determine competitive advantage of a urban area, giving the area a potential to attract and effectively use the production factors. Factors that will be presented here are those that determined competitiveness of urban areas in the 60's of 20th century, as well as those that contribute to it nowadays. The change of the significance of chosen location factors over time, pointed out by researched entrepreneurs as well as urban development programs analysis, gives grounds to state that role of "soft" factors of city's competitiveness, especially quality of life in the city, is growing. The article builds upon this notion, presenting chosen city rankings which give special attention to quality of life as major determinant. It also shows examples of activities aimed at increasing quality of life in urban areas which have been envisaged in program documents of chosen cities. (original abstract)
