Abstrakty

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie ewolucji współczesnej myśli ekonomicznej z zakresu międzynarodowych stosunków gospodarczych oraz dokonanie jej oceny. Autorka koncentruje rozważania na analizie teorii wymiany handlowej. Przedstawia tradycyjne teorie wymiany oraz teorie "nowe", mające na celu przezwyciężenie niedoskonałości modeli klasycznych. Dokonuje także przeglądu najnowszych osiągnięć teoretycznych, zmierzających do opracowania zintegrowanej teorii, łączącej analizę handlu i produkcji międzynarodowej.

Over the period of more than two hundred years there were numerous theoretical concepts and empirical studies devoted to identification of determinants of international trade. Classical and neo-classical theories explain trade using the concept of a country's comparative advantage. This advantage results from the possibility to manufacture some goods relatively cheaper than others, due to certain production technology or factor proportion differences. The other group of the socalled "new" trade theories of international trade, basing on the assumption of imperfect competition on the international market, underlines such phenomena as increasing economies of scale, product diversification, interindustry trade and increased significance of large enterprises. The newly created models look for the connections between the theory of international trade and the theory of a firm and international production. Although the analysis based exclusively on the observation of behaviour of individual firms gives no ground for the general conclusions at the country's level, the growing number of enterprises operating at the international level as well as progressive internalisation of their transactions create the necessity for a detailed study of the links between foreign direct investments and international trade. The present economic reality, however, is too complicated to be explained by means of one universal model. A "bundle" of mutually complementary theories would do this far better. (original abstract)
