Ponieważ strategie korporacji transnarodowych determinują ich stosunek do regionu oraz istnieje możliwość identyfikacji tych strategii, należy podjąć wyzwanie prowadzenia bardziej selektywnej polityki pozyskiwania inwestorów zagranicznych. Zarówno władze krajowe, jak i regionalne powinny poszukiwać i tworzyć dogodne warunki do inwestowania dla tych podmiotów gospodarczych, których działanie (poprzez otwartość na współpracę z lokalnymi firmami, szkołami, instytucjami naukowymi, wzmacnianie kompetencji lokalnych pracowników, skłonność do otwierania centrów badawczych w nowych miejscach lokalizacji itp.) przyczyni się do budowania lokalnego środowiska przedsiębiorczości, a tym samym wzmocni powstawanie specyficznych zasobów regionu. Innymi słowy, preferencje lokalizacyjne powinny osiągać te podmioty, których strategie rozwoju nie ograniczają się jedynie do wykorzystania podstawowych zasobów jednostki terytorialnej (taniej siły roboczej, zasobów naturalnych, korzystnego położenia geograficznego), ale przyczyniają się do rozwoju regionalnych systemów innowacji i wzmacniają konkurencyjność gospodarki regionalnej. Considerations on the role of regions as places of transnational corporation's (TNCs) location appear in economics literature since 50. of 20th century. However, most of them concentrate on two aspect of this issue only. First one consists of the attempt to adapt macroeconomic dimensions or this problem on the regional level, while the other concentrates on the bottom-up perspective, interpreting regions as an important source of competitive advantage. On the field of regional economics, most of works are developed in the second of these aspects, but one of its weaknesses is sill the theoretical context insufficiently recognized. Therefore, in regional science one can observe an increase of references to the institutional economics, whose main task is to analyze the economic dimension of the importance of institutions in economic development. The aim of this paper is to highlight the issues of TNCs' territorialisation, treated as potentially the highest stage of the process of building the linkages between corporation and its place of location, mainly by placing it in the broader theoretical context. What makes this context, it is the institutional economics on one, and the works on so called proximity paradigm in economics, on the other hand. Moreover, this paper contains also a review of chosen research devoted to the problem of territorialisation, as a tool of depicting the diversity of its methodological aspects. The culmination of the considerations is a presentation of main barriers of the process of territorialisation as well as recommendations for local and regional development policy dedicated to foreign direct investors.
