Abstrakty

The article presents an analysis of the day-of-the-week effect on the WSE. At the beginning, there is a description of the most frequently presented ways of recognition of the analysed forms of seasonality. Next, detailed statistical tests are carried out to check the statistical and economic relevance of the registered price distortions. Eventually, conclusions are formulated on the opportunity to make use of the day- of-the-week effect to achieve above-average profits. On the basis of the research, it may be stated that relative changes in the indices during sessions on Monday, Tuesday etc. are so insignificant that only institutional investors able to considerably reduce transaction costs have a chance to make use of the recognised irregularities in order to achieve above-average financial benefits. Thus, taking advantage of this sort of inefficiency of the price setting process in the case of individual investors may become a completion of other investment strategies but does not constitute a source of capital gains itself.(original abstract)
