The quality of the polyurethane material is created at every stage of its life: during design (selection of starting substrates), synthesis (preservation of stoichiometric quantities of substrates, their purity and using of appropriate reaction conditions), utility (according to the characteristics of the material) and even at the recycling stage of waste, when appropriately processed polyurethane can be reused. The paper presents examples of chemical and physical modification of polyurethanes in aspect of obtaining cross-linked and degradable materials for medical purposes. The author pointed out the groups of compounds that introduced into the polyurethane structure or used for physical modification, change its properties (including biocompatibility and degradability).
