The last two decades have been a period of dynamic expansion of regionalism in yhe world trade system. The development of this process has induced a wide debate and research on its influence on multilateral agreement (within WTO). The views of the opponents of regionalism, indicating its negative relationship with and possible detrimental and competitive effects on the structure of the multilateral system, are contrasted with the views of the supporters of regionalism which they define as the complementation of the multilateral agreement and support of its structure. The features of contemporary regional agreements, differentiating them in terms of quality and character, may be decisive for the process of multilateralisation of regionalism. (original abstract)
