The aim of the study is answering the question if the number and the value of mergers and acquisitions in the European banking sector (EU-25), particularly in the context of their dynamics during the last economic crisis, is connected with the enterprises' access to finance. The research relates the long-term structural changes of the European banking sector, changes in the value and the number of M&A in this sector, and macroeconomic variables to the value of the credit for non-financial corporations. While the identified relations do not allow recognizing important relationships between the processes of consolidation and the value of credit for the timespan 2002-2008, the value of the M&A transactions became most significant among the considered factors, influencing corporate bank lending, from 2008 onwards. The paper consists of five parts: - the first part defines the role of the banking sector in the economic growth and describes ts long-term structural changes, - the second part comprises the description of the changes in the area of M&A in relation to the crisis of 2008-2010, - the third part contains a literature review concerning the links between banking sector consolidation and corporate financing, - the fourth part comprises the introductory investigation of the relationships among particular macroeconomic variables in this area, - the fifth part consists of the recommendations for the further investigation.
