The intestinal microbiota involves a wide diversity of bacterial species and many of them cannot yet be cultured. They play different roles that are important for the host and have been associated with improving homeostasis. The introduction of beneficial bacterial species to the gastro intestinal tract of the host may be a very attractive option to re-establish the microbial equilibrium and prevent diseases. The species which are most commonly used in probiotic preparations are: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Escherichia, Enterococcus, Bacillus, Streptococcus and some Saccharomyces fungal strains. The manipulation of the host microflora may represent a new possibility in the prevention or management of many disorders. The aim of this paper is to review the new facts about the use of probiotics in healthy and pathological state of human organism. (original abstract)
