One of the most significant and challenging trends facing many countries is the rapid ageing of their population structure. Population ageing carries major implications for society. From a service management perspective the rising proportion of older con-sumers presents a number of vital challenges. These relate to issues such as how to design the service setting; how to introduce self-service technology; and how to prepare employees for interacting with older service consumers. Another important issue is how interactions between customers are influenced by age. The article examines the relevance of customer age to the customer-to-customer interaction (CCI) taking place in services. Drawing on the service management litera-ture, evidence concerning how service customers perceive other customers from differ-ent age groups is presented. Illustrations of age-related CCI are provided from a wide range of service industries, including retailing, tourism and leisure services. Approaches for managing interactions between customers from different age groups are discussed. Suggestions for further research into age and CCI are put forward.(original abstract)
