Omówiono rozmiary i strukturę bezrobocia, charakter polskiego bezrobocia, jego źródła, a także politykę przeciwdziałania bezrobociu i jego skutkom.

Under conditions of market economy unemployment is accepted to be a natural phenomenon. Nevertheless, its present level is a price that has been considered too high to pay for the recent economic transformations. Taking into account the hidden unemployment, which is considerably high, it should be assumed that the number of people out of work will rapidly increase. In the post-communist countries unemployment is a phenomenon which is completely new and unknown both for governments and societies. These countries are prepared neither conceptually nor organizationally to cope with the problems posed by unemployment. In the article the author presents some selected problems pertaining to unemployment in Poland. Attention has been focused on the following issues: volume and structure of unemployment (according to sex, education and territorial division), nature and sources of unemployment in Poland (with a particular consideration of the legacy of the past, inertia of processes lying in centrally planned economy still incompetently transformed) and, finally - policy of combating unemployment and offsetting its negative effects.
