The influence of the transportation system on the functioning of the national economy has been shown on the example of Hungary. Particular fields of transportation and the most important parameters of their evaluation have been presented. The view has been expressed that while assessing the socio-economic effectiveness of transportation considered as a single technical and organizational entity, it should be found out to what degree it ensures uninterrupted activity of economic sectors and enables their development.(original abstract)
