Autorzy, doradcy ekonomiczni "Solidarności", dokonują analizy polskiego programu gospodarczego, dotychczasowych rezultatów, przewidywanych trudności oraz próbują odpowiedzieć na pytanie, jakie z tych doświadczeń wynikają nauki dla innych postkomunistycznych krajów. Opisano również te formy pomocy ze strony zachodnich rządów, które najefektywniej służyłyby wsparciu transformacji polskiej gospodarki z nakazowej w rynkową.

The article of D. Lipton and J. Sachs is a synthetic description of the assumptions of the Polish economic reform, started on January 1,1990, and the effects of "Balcerowicz's plan" in the first months of its realization. The internal (economic and social) and external (foreign debts) dependencies, being a result of the above 40 years' communist rule, are also outlined. The authors of the article state that the Polish reform realized under the guidance of Leszek Balcerowicz is, considering the post-communist countries, the first non-simulated and consistent attempt at the transition to the free market economy. The first results of the economic reform are considered satisfactory (Sachs and Lipton are of the opinion that the disadvantages of the reform, with regard to cosumers, are exagerrated) but in the months and years to come Polish government may encounter a lot of obstacles, such as resistance to privatization or a claim for protectionist actions. The indispensable condition of Polans's success - say the authors - is the assistance of the West, both in the sphere of finance and know-how. (original abstract)
