Abstrakty

Przedstawiono sposób organizacji aukcji dzieł sztuki w domach aukcyjnych takich jak: Sotheby's i Christie's.

The article presents how art auctions in major houses are organized and gives the reader a glimpse at the way that a given object of art goes once a decision to sell is made until the final settlement of the transaction between the parties involved. The whole paper is divided into three parts the first of which presents a description of activities preceding the auction itself - appraisal, determination of reserve price, preparation of catalogues, insurance, etc. Part two focuses on the auction itself and it presents ways of bidding, for example the drafting and content of absentee bids. Particular attention is paid to explanation of the jargon used in the course of auctions, for example estimate increment, reserve hammer price. Part three deals with follow-up formalities such as memorandum of sale, settlement between the parties to the transactions, fees, commissions and additional charges and insurance, etc. The author has relied on information and data supplied by the two major and most renowned auction houses - Sotheby's and Christie's.(original abstract)
