Przedmiotem artykułu jest przegląd problemów polityki monetarnej i kursowej okresu przejściowego w Polsce; od teraz do członkostwa w EMU, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem wyboru średniookresowego celu polityki pieniężnej i przyjęcia określonego reżimu kursowego.

The main problem of the Polish monetary and exchange rate policy on the path to the Euro is external imbalance. We do not have the well-tried tools that would allow us to control external imbalance without transferring its negative effects to the internal imbalance of the economy. Controlling external imbalance is besed with serious problems if we are to move along the recognised official path to the Euro, i.e., the one that leads through compliance with all the convergence criteria. In this paper the author does not make an unambiguous recommendation for a specific path to reach the Euro. He simply expands on the dilemmas facing the monetary, exchange rate, and in part fiscal policy, under conditions of structural external imbalance. These are problems that are largely unrecognised in Poland as substantiated, according to the author, by the still slender research base. (original abstract)
