Characteristics and Impact of Globalisation Process on Changes Occurring on International Market of the Works of Art on the Example of Sotheby's and Christie's

Autorka zdefiniowała proces globalizacji i przeprowadziła jego analizę na dwóch odrębych płaszczyznach: w odniesieniu do korporacji transnarodowych, reprezentowanych przez domy aukcyjne Sotheby's i Christie's oraz w sferze międzynarodowego rynku dzieł sztuki, pojmowanego jako spójny system. Zwróciła także uwagę na wpływ i znaczenie procesu globalizacji dla przemian dokonujących się na międzynarodowym rynku dzieł sztuki, a zwłaszcza na jego przemianę w tak zwaną "branżę sztuki" (art industry) i związany z tym masowy, komercyjny charakter tego rynku oraz wskazała na pozytywne skutki omawianego procesu, dokonującego się na poziomie korporacji transnarodowych.
The article is devoted to the process of globalisation as an essential factor determining the character, structure and functioning of the international market of the works of art. The author makes an attempt to define the above-mentioned process and carries out its analysis at two separate levels: the first one relating to multinational corporations, represented by Sotheby's and Christie's and the second one referring to the sphere of international market of the works of art, understood as a certain coherent system. Attention is paid to the fact that the analysed process exists in the first case but it does not exist in the second case, although there are some premises apparently indicating that the home markets of the works of art are integrated into the system mentioned. Moreover, the author points out the barriers to the free exchange of the works of art between countries as the main reason hindering this process in the sphere of international market of the works of art. Further parts of the article underline the impact of the globalisation process on the changes which take place within the market under discussion, including above all its transformation into the so-called art industry and its mass, commercial character resulting from this. Positive effects of the process taking place at the level of multinational corporations are also mentioned. (original abstract)
