Przedstawiono różne definicje i paradygmaty modernizacji wsi oraz znaczenie struktur instytucjonalnych w procesach modernizacji. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na mechanizm presji modernizacyjnej wynikający z przygotowań Polski do integracji z UE.

Polish agriculture and rural areas need significant modernization in order to face challenges generated by global and European economies. The concept of rural modernization has changed in last decade. It is not dominated now by the paradigm of industrialization and urbanization as it was for a long time. modernization of agriculture and rural areas is understood as the process of institutional change enabling agricultural and rural people for participation in social and economic progress. Insufficient development of institutional structures is one of the major barriers in modernization of rural areas in Poland. Preparing for joining the European Union plays very important role in this aspect. Future Poland's accession to the EU is a kind of modernization pressure and a chance to receive extra financial resources for rural and agricultural modernization. (original abstract)
