Autorka omówiła problem rozwoju i funkcjonowania małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw w kontekście przystąpienia Polski do Unii Europejskiej. Przedstawiła rolę i znaczenie drobnej przedsiębiorczości a także szanse i zagrożenia związane z przynależnością Polski do Wspólnego Rynku.

In the first part of this article, the author discusses the role and importance of the SME sector in the economy, and in the second pert tries to describe the economic situation which small and medium-sized enterprises will have to face on Poland's accession to the European Union. Obviously, every change gives rise to certain opportunities and dangers. The opportunities in this case include the simplification and shortening of certain procedures, and the need to stabilise the tax system. Another opportunity lies in the possibility of obtaining resources from the EU budget to support the activities of the sector in question. The main sources of danger for firms employing no more than 250 persons are the high costs of adjusting to existing EU standards (e.g., quality norms, work safety), and the low level of competitiveness of such enterprises in relation to Western enterprises.
