Artykuł obejmuje problemy gospodarcze i społeczne, ujęte w kategoriach historii myśli ekonomicznej i historii gospodarczej, a dotyczące stosunków gospodarczych w przedrewolucyjnej Francji. Autor rozpoczął od sytuacji Francji przed wybuchem Wielkiej Rewolucji Francuskiej i od przedstawienia stanowego podziału społeczeństwa francuskiego (duchowieństwo, szlachta, stan trzeci obejmujący 97 procent ogółu ludności Francji). W kolejnej części scharakteryzował francuską myśl społeczno-gospodarczą pod koniec XVIII wieku. Na zakończenie autor omówił podejmowane próby reform w ramach monarchii absolutnej we Francji w latach 1774-1788.
The great French Revolution of 1789 initiated according to historians a new period in the history of the 19th century. It appeared to be the end of the social and economic structure formed in the last period of the ancient times in which the feudal structure came into being. The political and economical changes in the history of France during the period of 150 years before the revolution stimulate the historians to find the reasons of its outbreak. Trying to analyze the situation of France at that time, one should pay attention to the real changes in the social and economic structure of France and to its formal state (condition) during the reign of Louis XVI. The attempts of such changes initiated with the approval of the monarch were unsuccessful. The level of the economic development demanded the changes which were side-tracked by the feudal structures. The source of them was the bourgeoisie that did not participate in ruling. An important factor influencing the nature of the changes in France of those days was the output of the antifeudal social and economic views (ideas). (original abstract)
