This article, in discussing the theory of integration, demonstrates the impact of pressure groups n the integration process in the European Union. Among European integration theories, the lost distinguishable are those that focus on the engagement of nation-states in the integration processes as well as those that emphasise the importance of extra-national institutions in such processes. The latter theories recognise the contribution of pressure groups in deepening integration. According to historical chronology, these include: federalism, functionalism and neo-functionalism, multi-level governance and the concept of "extra-nationality". Theoretical work of late focuses increasing attention on the problem of democracy deficit in the European Union. Resolution of this problem is a pre-condition for continued progress in the integration of EU countries. The theoretical concepts presented in this work demonstrate that many actors take part in European Union integration processes and that extra-national pressure groups play an increasingly significant role.
