Przedmiotem artykułu jest zmieniająca się rola nacjonalizmu w niemieckiej historiografii w ujęciu porównawczym z historiografią amerykańską, francuską i włoską w latach 1789-1996.
The following article is concerned with the changing role of nationalism in German historiography in the context of broader trends in western countries, particularly the United States, France and Italy, in the years 1789-1966. The author presents similiarities and differences of American, French, Italian and German historiography on the roots of nationalism and concepts of national identity. He concludes that universal elements are to be found in German historical thought, though ethnocentrism played significant role in Western nationalism.
