In the debate about enlargement it is often taken for granted that European Monetary Union (EMU) membership will come long after European Union (EU) membership because the candidates are supposedly far from meeting the Maastricht criteria. However, assessments of the readiness of the candidates for EMU membership are usually based on past data. This paper has argued that the candidate countries from Central and Eastern Europe should have little difficulties in fulfilling in a sustainable way to the Maastricht fiscal criteria, and from a stricly economic point of view the present 15 EU members will not be strongly affected by the EMU aspect of enlargement.
