Autor podjął próbę wyjaśnienia złego stanu polskiego rolnictwa w okresie transformacji. Zwrócił uwagę na przekształcenia gospodarki z nierynkowej w rynkową, relacje wieś-miasto oraz sektory gospodarczy i rolniczy.

This article is an attempt to answer the question: What happened in the Polish agriculture in the period of transformation 1990-2000. Transformation commenced in 1990 resulted in three cumulative processes determining conditions of farming. It was the first time after World War n in Poland when overproduction of food products took place. With stabile population level in Poland at present and in the future there is no problem of increase of food supply. Second, in 1990 the dramatic widening of the ,,price scissors" of agricultural products and means of agricultural production took place. Price relations unfavourable to agriculture are a lasting factor shaping up the conditions of farming. Third, it was a first time when agriculture and countryside became a ,,receiver" of redundant labour force from the cities and non-agricultural sectors of the economy. The stabile number of population working in and subsisting on agri-culture makes it practically impossible to increase the efficiency of labour. Agricultural farms quite rationally make use of the factor of production which is most available and cheap - the work of members of peasant families. The agricultural policy should be carried out outside of agriculture. The increase of jobs in non-agricultural sectors and development of little and medium-size towns will be the source of the outflow of labour force from agriculture, and these processes in the same time will be determining factor of growth of effi-ciency in agriculture and agrarian transformations.
