W artykule zaprezentowano zagraniczną politykę handlową Japonii w latach 1995-2000. Omówiono rozwój gospodarczy kraju oraz przedstawiono wymianę handlową Japonii z wybranymi państwami.

Japan is an island country with scarce natural resources. It accommodates a population of over 125 million people in an area of just 377,000 km2. Despite these limitations and the destruction of almost its entire industrial base during the Second World War, Japan has managed not only to rebuild its economy but become one of the world's industrial leaders as well. This article presents Japan's foreign trade policy during the past decade as well as an analysis of the causes of the economic crisis of the 1990s. Although significant improvement in some economic indicators can be observed, the period of stagnation is still continuing. Foreign trade plays an important role in the Japanese economy. For many years Japan has enjoyed a considerable export surplus; it is due to the trade surplus that Japan has managed to stabilize its position in the world. Japan maintains trade relationships with almost every country in the world. The economic crisis that affected Japan at the end of the 1990s was the effect of the worsening economic situation and mistakes committed in the country's economic policy. The effects of the crisis include, inter alia, rapid growth of public and banking debt and the collapse of other markets in Southeast Asia. Despite periodic stagnation, Japan remains the second (after the United States) largest economy in the world. (original abstract)
