Even though in the Republic of Turkey there is no clear-cut division into the /pro- and anti-Union lobbies, one can identify a number of groups representing these tendencies. The pro-Union lobby includes representatives of government and public administration agencies (e.g. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit), economic organisations, various associations (e.g. TUSIAD), foundations (e.g. IKV) or trade unions (e.g. Hak-Is) and eminent representatives the media (e.g. Mehmet Ali Birand). The anti-union lobby has not yet formed itself, however, one can mention here representatives of the Army (e.g. General Tuncer Kilinc), political parties (eg. Dogu Perincek and IP), state administration and some of communities of farmers, businessmen and intellectuals who most probably will not benefit if Turkey is accepted to the European Union. Pro- and anti Union lobbying takes on either direct or indirect form. In the first months of 2002 a peculiar confrontation between the adherents of the two opposing camps took place in the media, being a good example of indirect lobbying. To influence public opinion and politicians both in Turkey and in the EU, lobbying groups tried to exploit such controversial cases as revealing the content of diplomatic correspondence of Karen Fogg's (EU's Ambassador), abolition of capital punishment and restrictions in the use of the Kurdish language, statement by General Kilinc regarding possible alternatives to the "European" policy, etc. This recent confrontation shows that there are some similarities in this respect to the Polish situation (e.g. the Turkish Party of the National Movement - MHP has a lot in common with the Polish Peasant Party - PSL).(original abstract)
