The economic policy makers identified industrial clusters as a potential drive for economic and innovative growth. In fact, many economies owe to industrial clusters a surprisingly high percentage of inland production and employment. They are especially present in rich regions. Thanks to their unique features, clusters can promote innovations due to sharing information via formal and informal channels, permanent training of the specialised workforce and innovative by-products. The interest in clusters encompasses a wide circle of government and extragovernment actors, also in the European Union countries. The article consists of the following parts: the theoretical clusters concepts mainly on the basis of the western literature, the policy towards clusters in the economies of European countries and the specificity of supporting clusters in transition economies. The purpose of this article is presentation of clusters concepts, their types and examples of supporting clusters in Europe with a focus on their specificity in transition economies. The analysis of the clusters concepts leads to the conclusions with regard to changes in the hierarchy of territorial determinants of companies' competitiveness, i.e. agglomeration effects and external advantages relevant to them, at present giving way to network advantages, which is first of all connected with the globalisation processes. The globalisation and integration processes have lead to a greater specialisation and the regional competitiveness has made a shift from the level of prices to the level of quality and innovations. From the point of view of the regional policy in the Middle Europe countries, the question has grown very important, how to provoke the development of such a cluster - particularly in the area of high technology. This question is becoming very important in the aspect of Poland's membership in the EU and of the competitiveness of our economy. (original abstract)
