Abstrakty

W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiono kształtowanie się kultury dialogu. Następnie omówiono specyfikę miasta oraz kształtowanie się kultury miejskiej. W zakończeniu przedstawiono funkcjonowanie współczesnego miasta, opisując wagę dialogu w warunkach globalizacji i uniwersalizacji kultury.

Two statements form the starting point for the discussion in this article. Firstly, the contemporary world is to a significant degree dominated by the city, as a socio-spatial form, and by urban culture. Secondly, the broadly-understood orientation towards dialogue performs a significant and increasingly important function in social life, at all levels — from the micro to mega scale. With the city, a new type of society has emerged that is highly differentiated; new centres of learning, commerce, politics and religion have arisen. Of course, there had to be an adequate organisational-spatial system corresponding to the completely new socio--cultural system, a material framework for all those new phenomena and processes. Both from the "social" as well as "spatial" point of view, the city appears to us as a closed area, which, on the one hand, implies a kind of autonomous microcosmos and, on the other, the creation of an area limited by clear boundaries and contrasted with the surrounding natural environment. Culture always undergoes modification depending on the needs of a given society at various stages of its development. Modern industrial society stage brought the need for a modern personality, a particularly significant element of which is the ability to establish relationships, to communicate beyond one's own environment, tolerance, and a willingness to negotiate. A city, which is the basic social environment of industrial and post-industrial societies, by its very nature, is a place for dialogue between the past and the present, as well as the future. Dialogue between various values associated with social development, human development, and with definition of the purpose of people's existence and actions, is characteristic of modern times. Problems are becoming increasingly evident in adjusting the city's social and spatial organisation to the needs of groups or categories of citizens who for years have been disenfranchised, invisible, marginalized, or of little significance.
