Edmund S. Phelps an American professor of political economics at Columbia University was awarded 2006 Nobel Prize in Economic Science. In an announcement made on 9 October 2006 professor Gunnar Öquist, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, stated that E.S. Phelps won the award "for his analysis of intertemporal tradeoffs in macroeconomic policy". The Academy of Sciences noted that the work of E.S. Phelps has deepened our understanding of the relation between short-run and long-run effects of economic policy and that his contributions have a decisive impact on economic research as well as policy. In one of his first published papers from 1961, E.S. Phelps derived the so-called golden rule of capital formation, which deals with how much should be spent today versus how much should be saved for future generations. Under the rule, the desirable investment rate should equal the share of capital in national income. According to the prevailing view during the 1960s there existed a negative relationship between inflation and unemployment, the so-called Phillips curve. E.S. Phelps challenged this view. He formulated the expectations-augmented Phillips curve, according to which inflation depends on both unemployment and inflation expectations. (original abstract)
