Przeprowadzono charakterystykę najbardziej znanych modeli ochrony zdrowia oraz przedstawiono zagadnienia dotyczące problematyki ich funkcjonowania. Podkreślono kwestię ewolucji modeli ochrony zdrowia w państwach o gospodarce rynkowej.

The topicality and weight of this issue have compelled the author to deal more closely with the complex problem of how healthcare is organised in market economies with respect to changing the healthcare model in Poland. The author first describes the most well-known healthcare models (in their pure form) and then discusses issues related to how they function. The closing section of the article deals with the evolution of healthcare models in market economies. The author concludes that the evaluation and choice of healthcare model should be based on a comprehensive analysis of healthcare models that takes into consideration not only the level of healthcare expenditure, but also non-economic factors that govern healthcare as well. Evaluating healthcare models is complex and not an “either-or” issue. The applicability of a given model should be analysed (evaluated) in terms of political, economic, and social goals. Moreover, the doctrinal assumptions of healthcare models are currently waning in significance in the face of the evolution of healthcare models. At present, in spite of existing differences, activities aimed at increasing the effectiveness of healthcare and stabilising its financing may be undertaken independently from the healthcare model adopted in a given country.(original abstract)
