Omówiono znaczenie edukacji europejskiej w dyskusjach i działalności organizacji. Przedstawiono początki edukacji europejskiej na przykładzie studiów europejskich prowadzonych w polskich szkołach wyższych.

European education - initially a field that was left entirely in the hands of individual states - is beginning to play an ever-increasing role in European integration policy. This is not happening without reason; European education was already, prior to the establishment of the European Communities, being seriously taken into account in the activities of the movement for European unity that developed in West European countries after the Second World War. Organisations whose members were recruited from amongst Central and East European émigrés living in Western Europe also participated in this movement. Their contribution to the movement for European unity cannot be overestimated, as evidenced by, for instance, the case of Dr J.H. Retinger, who performed important managerial functions in the European Movement. The first part of this article is devoted to the significance of European education in the debates and activities of the above-mentioned organisations. The material used by the author derives partly from original documents kept in the Historical Archives of the European Union at the European University Institute in Florence. The European Communities, in their gradual and determined encroachment into the field of European educational policy, have drawn many ideas and much inspiration from the ideas and experiences that arose in the European Movement. In the second part of the article, the author discusses the beginnings and development of European education, illustrated by the example of European studies courses at Polish universities, which over time have led to, among other things, a broadening of knowledge about European integration, the training of young specialists in this field, and to the establishment of a new academic discipline - europeistyka (European studies). The changes occurring in the field of European education in Poland should be seen in the broader context of events linked with the Bologna Process. (original abstract)
