Abstrakty
EN
In the wake of the changes that occurred in the 20th century in international relations, especially after the European Communities were set up in the 1950s, international and regional integration has become one of the most frequently studied phenomena in the social sciences. However, at the initial stage of development of interest in the issue of integration, to carry out empirical studies in this field (such research is now dominant) required working out an appropriate conceptual apparatus, which was later to constitute the "common language" of the sub-discipline that integration studies became. The fundamental discussion, in which the difficulties in describing the complicated phenomenon of integration were revealed, took place in the 1960s and 1970s and bore fruit in the form of a rich and diverse theoretical output in regard to the conceptualisation and definition of international integration. The authors discuss the most important findings that resulted from this discussion, indicating the ambiguity of terms and concepts that often occurs. They show that the concept of integration needs to be defined each time it is used (often fairly loosely) in order not to have to infer its particular sense from the given context. The fundamental conceptual categories that are the subject of this article are those of integration as a condition and as a process, applied to the consideration of integration from the point of view of supranationality and political community. Other ways of conceptualising integration include considering at as mutual responsiveness or social cohesion. Finally, the authors address the use of the terms: economic, political, military and social integration, which are difficult to separate in practice. (original abstract)
