W artykule omówiono miejsce i funkcje towarzystw ubezpieczeń wzajemnych w różnych ustrojach społeczno-gospodarczych. Przedstawiono również kierunki rozwoju sektora ekonomii społecznej i TUW w gospodarce globalnej.

Mutual insurance associations (MIAs) are social-economic entities existing within the insurance sector. The aim of the article is to present stimulants for the development of MIAs in various socio-economic systems and to draw conclusions about the direction their development may take. There is an introduction, two sections on the merits of these associations and a conclusion. The first part of the article contains a discussion on the place and functions of mutual insurance associations in different socio-economic systems; the problems are illustrated by a table presenting MIA participation in the most important countries of the world and in Poland. The second part of the paper outlines the stimulants as well as developmental directions of the social economy sector and MIA in the light of the global economy. The conclusion presents the main stimulants for MIA development in Poland. (original abstract)
