Abstrakty
The article presents econometric analysis of convergence, characteristic for the European Union countries at NUTS-2 level. Convergence analysis represents one of the most important research domains conducted in the area of economic growth. The research carried out in this matter constitutes an attempt to answer the question regarding the decrease in income level differences (δ convergence), and the speed in reaching the state of sustainable growth by economies, as well as factors characteristic for such growth (β convergence). The identification of δ convergence comes down to defining the gross domestic product level of diversification in the cross-section of regions in the particular time span. As opposed to the above, the study of ß convergence focuses on the influence of initial income level (yt0) on the speed of economic growth. In case of conditional convergence, apart from the initial income level there are also considered other factors influencing economic growth. Quantitative analysis of these interrelations results in many problems for researchers associated, among others, with the selection of suitable estimation method, panel structure (elements T and N), the problem of endogenous variables and measurement error, and also the availability of statistical data. The hereby study presents estimation results having applied pooled model, Squares Dummy Variable Model (LSDV) and also dynamic models estimated by means of GMM System Estimator. The article also briefly characterizes these approaches, together with the selected information about problems resulting from their application in the context of growth models. (original abstract)
