Zamieszczono analizę sektora mikro, małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw w kontekście sytuacji makroekonomicznej obu krajów i innowacyjności gospodarek polskiej i brytyjskiej.

The role of this paper is to emphasise the role of SMEs in two European countries: Poland and UK, from the point of view of their impact upon the economic growth and innovation in the two economies. The topic seems especially important nowadays, during the global crisis, as it clearly shows that small and medium sized enterprises still remain the largest source of new jobs, generate most of exports and introduce a lot of innovative solutions. This proves that SMEs' influence upon national economies is very strong. Compared to Poland, in the United Kingdom there are nearly twice as many small and medium sized enterprises. In effect, British economy develops faster than Polish and is much more innovative. The most important reason why SMEs in the UK outnumber those in Poland so vastly is the environment in which British companies operate -much more business-friendly than in Poland, as confirmed in the World Bank report called Doing Business. In order to improve conditions of opening, operating and closing businesses in Poland, Polish authorities could and indeed should analyse solutions adopted in the United Kingdom, and, where possible, implement them in our country. Such benchmarking can contribute to minimising bad impact of crisis upon Polish economy and improve its competitive and innovative edge in order to improve the growth of Polish economy in the future.
